Luna Park

History

First opening in 1912, Luna Park is Australia’s oldest theme park. Boasting a modern collection of rides and amusements, the theme park has maintained some of its older and original rides, most notably, the scenic railway which wraps itself around the perimeter of Luna Park’s towering boundaries.

Luna Park has retained its colourful exterior of a huge clown face with a mouth for the entrance. The design is iconic for both the Suburb of St. Kilda and Melbourne City. Because of its location and the fact the Park’s exterior has stayed true to its original design, there is a certain carnival seaside charm to it.

Luna Park – Enter for FREE

To enter Luna Park entry is free. For the adult, walking around Luna Park without spending a cent and admiring the historic sections of the Park and original rides can be enjoyable. You can:

  • Take photos
  • Enjoy the atmosphere
  • Bring your own food (that’s right, it’s permitted) with plenty of places for you to eat

Taking children around the park and not expecting to spend any money however is probably a completely different ball game. Surrounded by sweet snacks, food and rides, a child not being able to indulge a little may not be as much fun. The park sells tickets for rides including tickets that allow you to ride on as many rides as many times as you like for the day. This is a cost effective option and good value for your money if you want to be on the rides constantly.

Lunar Park Rides & Games

The rides at Luna Park are an excellent combination of rides for

  • The thrill seekers
  • Young children and families

The old school elements of some of the preserved rides at Luna Park are a strong attraction including the likes of

  • The Scenic Railway
    > The ride that stands out amongst all other rides is the Scenic Railway. By standout, we mean this literally as it winds its way up and down the perimeter of Luna Park’s boundaries before passing above the huge clown head entrance.
    > The ride was installed as part of the original Luna Park design in 1912 and today is the oldest and only one of nine of these types of roller coasters left in the world.
    > Why is it called scenic? Because there are some great views of the surrounding St.Kilda suburb, beaches and bay.
  • Carnival Games
There are a number of games reminiscent of old carnivals that allow players to win prizes.

Luna Freeze

The Luna Freeze is an addition to Luna Park’s winter lineup. An ice-skating rink is placed in the centre of the park with session times throughout the day.

Food and Snacks

Taking to rides and games can be hard work and the Park has plenty of eating options to keep your energy levels up. Of course there is the option of bringing your own food. Then there is the food available by Luna Park with burgers, chips, soft drinks and the more healthy options.

And of course, let’s not forget carnival favourites such as the fairy floss.

Location

Luna Park is located in the heart of the popular city fringe suburb of St. Kilda amongst its well known streets and by its bustling beach and parks area.
