The Royal Melbourne ShowThe annual Royal Melbourne Show (know as “The Show” to locals) comes to town in the middle of September during the school holidays. Usually beginning on the second Thursday of September and running for 10 consecutive days, it is located at the Royal Melbourne showgrounds in Ascot Vale, approximately 10 minutes from the centre of Melbourne on the train. The dedicated train station serves only special events and runs the entire duration of The Show. Like all Royal shows, it was initially established as an agricultural show, with competitions and entertainment. However, since then, the theme has evolved from being a predominately agricultural to a more commercial taste, with showbags and carnival rides being centre stage. Also, with the introduction of more events at night, including local and international bands playing and later opening hours, it caters for all walks. For children, this is THE event of the school holidays. If you can convince the adults to go, it is a great treat! Not only could you potentially consume your body weight in lollies and junk food over the next following weeks, you would get low quality toys in colourful bags that looked good (only from far away)! Only now do I understand how much of a stress it would be to look after your kids at the show. You’d definitely get the highs and the lows, but nothing a bag full of sugar won’t fix. The animal displays are quite amazing; who knew cows could grow to 1 tonne! You can pet Lamas, Alpacas, cows, rabbits and all breeds of types of dogs and cats. And the dog show gives you an interesting insight into the world of animal shows, from the perspective of the proud dog owners, breeders and judges. The food hall has been revamped to including all types of exhibitors. From salami makers to dairy to tea producers and wine makers; it’s sample heaven! You could fill your stomach going from stall to stall tasting the unique produce of Victoria. So here’s my list of must-dos at The Show:
