Eureka Tower - Skydeck 88

Because of it’s meticulously thought out urban planning, Melbourne city is both a wonderful sight to behold at street level and from a bird’s eye view way up in the sky. It is blessed with diverse suburbs stretching out to the horizon, urban city streets, the bay and generous inclusions of greenery. Up until recently one of the best ways to achieve a perspective over all this was from the Rialto Towers Melbourne Observation Deck. Now there’s a new player in town with something else to offer – the Eureka Tower’s own Skydeck 88.

Eureka Tower

With its bold unique design reaching for the highest point of Melbourne’s skyline, Eureka has quickly fought for iconic status on all things related Melbourne, whether it is on a postcard or in television coverage.

Eureka tower, predominately a residential tower, was completed in 2005 and at 300 metres in height surpassed Melbourne’s Rialto Towers by almost 50 metres. The Rialto held the height record for almost 20 years so when Eureka was completed, it’s impact changed the entire Melbourne Skyline. Just as impressive as its height is its complicated geometric design, its bold lines meeting high in the sky within its golden crown, resulting in spectacular effects when struck by the sun.

At 92 storeys, the Skydeck sits at an impressive height of almost 300 metres on lucky level 88.

Eureka Views

Being the highest point of any other structure in the city of Melbourne, there is absolutely nothing to block out Skydeck 88’s spectacular views. Set on Southbank across the Yarra River from the Central Business District and the Rialto Towers, the Skydeck offers a completely new perspective of Melbourne.

Views of

The Central Business District – Melbourne’s most impressive and original skyline now continuing into the docklands

  • The suburbs sprawling to the horizon
  • Port Phillip Bay
  • Docklands
  • Parks and Gardens
  • Sporting precincts

A suggested time to visit the deck is before twilight. During this time visitors can observe the city in full light with its blue waters and green areas, then changes of the light over the city as the sun sets. At this twilight time, watching the lights of the city gradually appearing makes for a mesmerizing show.

The Edge

On top of its spectacular views, Skydeck 88 offers visitors an extra thrill. “The Edge” is a glass cube that projects its occupants 3 metres out of the Skydeck, suspending visitors almost 300 metres above the ground.

Despite its height on the building, if you look closely, “The Edge” can sometimes be seen protruding out of the crown of the towers from surrounding areas in the city.

  • Photos of your time inside the edge can be purchased from The Edge Shop
  • Bookings cannot be made in advance, tickets to be purchased from the skydeck
  • The edge may not operate at times due to adverse weather conditions.
  • Children under 7 require a parent or guardian inside the cube
  • The edge is an additional price to the admission of skydeck 88

Eureka Skydeck 88 vs Rialto’s Melbourne Observation Deck

After holding the title of Melbourne’s tallest tower for more then 20 years, Rialto Towers were overtaken by Eureka Towers by more then 30 metres. The observation deck of Eureka towers on level 88 is also much higher.

Purely because Eureka’s Skydeck 88 is much higher then Rialto’s Observation deck visitors may ask the question, why visit any other deck? The answer is, because the two decks have different things to offer and are both well worth the visit. Here are some of the areas where the Eureka Skydeck 88 excels.

  • Skydeck 88 is the highest observation deck in the city. For many, the higher the better.
  • Except from aircraft, there has never been a perspective towards and over the entire Central Business District like this before. The Rialto has impressive views in and amongst the city whilst Eureka sits on the Southbank of the river allowing for a sweeping view of the entire city skyline from start to finish.
  • Spectacular views of the Rialto Towers can be had from Skydeck 88. Obviously views of Rialto from the Rialto Observation Deck are limited.
  • Skydeck 88 goes well and truly beyond the Observation Deck concept with some additions to enhance visitor experience
    > The Edge
    > Serendipity Table
    > Function rooms and Bars
  • The level above Skydeck 88 is dedicated to function space. This is called Eureka 89
    > This includes a fine dining restaurant with spectacular Eureka night time views

The Eureka Skydeck has incredible views as does the Melbourne Observation Deck, both providing different experiences with Eureka including some notable features. For many visitors and locals, the Melbourne Observation Deck is arguably the better experience and perspective of the city. With both decks being quite different in respect to what they offer, it is worth visiting each of them for a different experience altogether.
