Ice House is soon to become Australia’s premium Ice Sports Venue.

It will contain:

  • 2 Olympic sized world class ice skating rinks
  • Café and Bar
  • Venue Rooms

It will host

  • Recreational ice skating and roller skating
  • Professional training sessions and support for Ice Hockey and other ice sporting teams
  • National and International events

The Future of Ice Sports in Australia

No doubt Australians love their sport and particularly in Melbourne, the sports capital of Australia. The Ice House will add a truly unique and welcome addition to Melbourne’s collection of premium sporting venues. More importantly, the Ice House will give a national boost to our under represented ice sport.

With the Ice House promoting ice sports the popularity on a local and National level is bound to sky rocket. Ice Hockey has all the exciting factors of a sport that Australians will love, there has just never been the venue, platform or promotion required to kick start public enthusiasm.

Andrew Shelton, Ice Sports Australia: “Ice Hockey I think is a game Australians will respond to…It’s got all the characteristics that they would enjoy…it’s physical, it’s athletic, it’s extremely fast and very competitive

The Team - Melbourne Ice

Ian Webster – Team Manager, Melbourne Ice

Melbourne Ice has been Australia’s premiere Ice Hockey team, training and playing in a humble ice skating rink in Oakleigh South. The only ice skating rink in Australia, it is far from Olympic standards and there are many individuals and groups competing for ice time. The Ice House will allow Melbourne Ice and other teams to have plenty of time on the ice in a premium venue of an Olympic standard.

Other Partnerships

  • The Olympic Winter Institute of Australia will be based at the Ice House after maintaining a small office in South Melbourne.
  • Ice Sports Victoria
  • Ice Hockey Victoria
  • Due to the availability of ice time, Olympic ice skating hopefuls, curlers and clubs have endured a majority of their training off the ice and at hours late in the evening/early morning.

Under Construction

The fate of the Ice House development has been an ongoing and uncertain process. It was approved then faced issues over financial support, prolonging the go ahead for construction.

Since early 2009 the construction of the Ice House has been in full swing and is taking shape.

Completion Date

Currently, the Ice House is on schedule to be completed in February 2010

Location

The Ice House is currently being constructed in the Waterfront precinct of Docklands. For more details on the Docklands and the Waterfront area see [Docklands]
