Sport & Recreation

Melbourne is without a doubt the sports capital of Australia. It attracts thousands of visitors nationally and world wide and maintains its electric atmosphere as the locals themselves are always willing to support and attend events. The government has also contributed much to sports in Victoria to secure large events and create impressive sporting venues/precincts.

The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), original home to Australian Rules football (AFL), has hosted many large scale events including the 1956 Olympics.
For motor enthusiasts the motorcycle grand prix on the Phillip island circuit and the Formula 1 Grand Prix at Albert Park are much awaited events attracting masses of people annually, as too does the Australian Open.

Melbourne is also renowned for being the only city that stops for a horse race – the Melbourne cup – a public holiday combining sport and fashion, is nothing out of the ordinary to the locals who hold sport and its history close to their hearts.
