Nelson

Nestled within the very mouth of the Glenelg River, Nelson is a quaint and scenic fishing and holiday get-away township that is frequently flocked by visitors from around different parts of the globe. It lies 433 km west of Melbourne and around a couple of kilometers from the South Australian border. The town of Nelson houses various pubs, a couple of motels, guest houses, general stores and several caravan parks – which all provide the common necessities of every avid traveler.

Other than these, the township of Nelson is surrounded by a scenic countryside. The Lower Glenelg National Park extends eastwards along the bank of Glenelg River. Within the township of Nelson, tourists can also find the enchanting Discovery Bay National Park with its total length stretching south-east along the coastline towards the Cape Bridgewater. This particular park is comprised of a remarkable sweep of coastline which stretches 50 km eastward to Cape Bridgewater. Along this coast includes a plethora of vast expanses of rolling white sand dunes, Aboriginal middens, sweeping beaches, pristine waters and unique rock formations. Amidst this park thrives various animal life ranging from grey kangaroos to red-necked wallabies and over 140 bird species. Plus, this park is also noted for its impressive and massive coastal, swamp and natural vegetation.

Another remarkable tourist spot which enables every tourist to take a glimpse at every natural wonder possessed by the town of Nelson is the Great South Walk which is made up of over 250 km of circular walking track with both its beginning and its end located at the town of Portland. It has been established by community groups and it primarily heads north through a farmland, turning westward through native forests and the Lower Glenelg National Park. It continues through the southern bank of the Glenelg River to its very mouth near Nelson, then returns to its origin through the east along the coastline of the Discovery Bay. There are optional detours a few kilometers away from Lake Monibeong and to Mt. Richmond, going along the Descartes Bay and around the coast of Cape Bridgewater. It passes the Springs, the Petrified Forest, the vivid seal colony and heads further to Point Danger until it again reaches Portland.

Nelson’s exquisite beauty, however, holds more than natural parks and outdoor thrills, for the advent of modern commercialization brought in several shopping areas for every tourist’s need.
