Communing with Nature

Like other refreshing places and stimulating sceneries, Phillip Island also has some outdoor activities that can be tried by people who want to commune with nature or just want to have fun during a vacation. Phillip Island has walking and cycling activities, which can be available through bicycles that can be hired in the island. Aside from the picturesque view of surfers and migratory birds at the Woomalai beach, taking long walks or riding bicycles around the towns and coast lines allows people to discover hiking places and beaches that are equally incredible as their popular counterparts. For instance, in Cape Woomalai Trail, anyone can have access to the path along the cliff tops at the southern part of the island -- without any requirement or extra fee. On the other hand, for activities close to the island's waters, George Bass Coastal Walk is a good place where walking and swimming are both allowed.

If observing the island's resources is not sufficient enough, Phillip Island also presents the option of going fishing and exploring the depths of its waters. For fishing, jetties or boats may be taken to catch snappers, flatheads, whitings, salmons, squids and sharks, with prawns, mussel and pipis used as bait. Fishing charters are also available in the Western Port while boats can be hired in the town of Cowes and Rhyll.

Meanwhile, for the outdoor sports enthusiasts, Phillip Island also hosts a variety of canoeing and kayaking activities. Canoeing and kayaking events are usually held at the northern part of the island, where currents are lesser and at the inlets and bays around the island. For more spectacular views, paddling around Churchill Island, Swan Bay and Rhyll Inlet offers sights of migratory birds and other wildlife.

Other Recreational Activities

Phillip Island is not only the haven for those who love nature and the sea. On its beautiful grounds and up in its blue skies, Phillip Island also plays host to some recreational activities that tourists, foreign or local, like to indulge in.

For example, Phillip Island has its own picnic sites found in each town. At San Remo, there are facilities for picnic activities available at Richard Grayden Park, which is located at the foreshore of the town. At Lock Road, meanwhile, the same facilities can be used at the picnic site of Rhyll. At New Haven, in the park along Forrest Avenue, there are set-ups of barbecue facilities that are coin-operated alongside other picnic amenities that tourists can make use of. Finally, at the town of Cowes, electric barbecue and picnic tables are available while the picnic site in Red Rocks provides gas barbecues to tourists.

Aside from picnics and barbecues, Phillip Island can also cater to the needs of golf and sports enthusiasts at the island's Cowes Golf Club. With amenities like a bar, restaurant and gaming room, Cowes Golf Club has a whole 18-hole course that makes playing golf in the island a much more fun experience. Although the Club itself is already attractive, Cowes Golf also lets its players be more in touch with nature and wildlife sceneries around the island through its various travel packages; these packages include visits to the Penguin Parade, wildlife parks and other enchanting sites.

Like other popular travel destinations, Phillip Island cannot do without shopping markets and sites that sell local crafts and produce. Among the markets that tourists can visit for souvenirs and other items are Churchill Island Farmers Market, Cowes Market, Cowes-Island Craft Market and New Haven Craft Market. These town markets have different schedules of operations, but are mostly open on weekends.

When it comes to providing a mile-high experience, Phillip Island is not to be left behind with its own grandiose view of the Island through its helicopter tours. Priced at the minimum of AUD60 per person, the air tour can satisfyingly accommodate two persons at once and uses only helicopters that have reputable records in flying. Serving tourists everyday, the helicopter island tour starts its flights at 8:30 am and only until 6:00 pm. From the airport, the helicopter flies over Cape Woomalai, San Remo, New Haven and then over Churchill Island before heading back to the airport.
