Port FairyLying along the coast of Moyne Shire of Victoria of Australia is the antiquated fishing and farming village known as Port Fairy. Standing within this quaint little town, one can view the Southern Ocean waves surging along the south-west coast of the state of Victoria. During the early nineteenth century, this particular area has been primarily used by seal hunters and whalers. In 1835, a whaling station has been built on the location currently known as the Griffiths Island. Today, a fishing fleet still continues its operation from the wharf along the river. With its lush and nostalgic atmosphere, hundreds of foreign visitors seek solace in this meek town. Exploring the innate charm of Port Fairy can be quite a treat for every eager traveler. For starters, visitors will stand at awe at the sight of Port Fairy's waterfront. The Moyne River's pristine still waters act as a perfect mirror-like surface in which the image of the port house and its reflection converge into one seamless whole -- a sight most shutterbugs can't resist taking a picture of. Guests could also opt to enjoy a relaxing stroll along the historic wharf and discover the town's elegance and remarkable history. Port Fairy also houses one of the most antiquated lighthouses in the world, which is the Port Fairy lighthouse. Built in 1859 by Scottish stone masons, this lighthouse can be reached by taking a 400-meter hike to the Eastern tip of the Griffiths Island. Standing at a height of 11-meters on the jagged rocky shore just exactly where the long hike is definitely worth it, for what awaits you upon standing on the top of this lighthouse is an awesome view that is truly beyond compare. Despite its postcard-perfect quaintness, Port Fairy also offers one of the most vibrant musical events other than the more chaotic Ozzfest or Lolapalooza, which is the festive Port Fairy Folk Festival. This annual festival serves as a venue for international and local artist to share their music to a wider audience. Artists that participate in this four-day festival dish out a wide array of musical styles such as blue, folk, jazz, bluegrass, rock and world music. Each year, this festival is bustling with life from the astounding number of music lovers. The vibrancy of this event is further accentuated by lively Children's Folk Circus, a Free Festival of the Streets, buskers and various novelty markets. |
